One his later things that I found out the back story of how he hand landed the job, was paid it and how it was designed... the Orange paint advert!!!

I remember when I designed this font, it was around the time my tutor was bringing in his friends from the industry but specifically Johnny Hardstaff.

He still takes the piss outta me for the fact I was amazed at the size of his sketchbooks on the projection, me being blonde for a min they were only A3 but projected larger but I was just fascinated at the pure and clear development he had with any of his designs... he could've handed that sketchbook over for anyone to created anything exactly as he wanted and not even have them ask a question!

I was thinking about what I got into centrals st martins for and it was this piece... I still love this as well!!

Its an illegible font that represents all the characters of the alphabet and the numbers 0-9, this is meant specifically for an aesthetic title font and it was created on the basis that each character has inside and outside contours that is almost held by invisible bolts like sheet metal on plane and these are what important because of the influence that we were given to use was based on RAF aeroplanes etc that is at the Cosford Museum, Cosford just outside of Birmingham...

maybe not the best explanation but in my interview it came across to them, Andrea, Andrea and Douglas!
I still think its the coolest that they teach me now too and they still remember this too, I was so scared that day and I just wanted this so bad....

JONATHAN BARNBROOK!

VIRUS FONTS / BARNBROOK BIBLE / BRITISH HEART FOUNDATION

He is a bit of a type genius too, the fun thing about him is that he is very controversial and if his work is anything to go by then he is very opinionated!

He was well nice when I met him though, had a moment with the then neon Lucazade Ads and the V&A exhibition posters... he just got what I was talking about... that was great :) i am very simple and that was a good day, gave me a mad boost of confidence to know that i can converse, with someone like that... it was so cool that everyone was falling over to chat to him and he was talking to me...

Something about non format wants me to just delve into the world of type... I know that type isn't just about knowing the rules but having an eye for detail. Unfortunately I don't have that as a natural talent but I have a feeling that the passion to learn helps, I think type can be so expressive to feelings, emotions and moods. Luckily thats something I can express, the changes of a persona through the day...

I am so fortunate to be learning type from Catherine Dixon and Phil Baines, they can just see something and run off with critical points thats wrong about it but Catherine is so polite about it and Phil is just straight forward because he knows what he is talking about... So I don't mess with them, I take in what they have said and just completely agree because once I make those changes to that piece of work, it some how transforms to being on the way to something that is at their standard... that, that standard is what I want to go towards...

The similarities between the designers I have mentioned have, non format are like the driving force of innovative and almost aesthetic based spin on the traditions of type where as I respect Catherine and Phil like the masters of traditional type. Although their current work has its own right today, its breathtakingly beautiful. I have never really had a real strong respect for something other than type and even the few things I do know make a big difference towards my work.

just some of the names of places that I want to almost keep a record that these are my sources of inspiration for every and all design work... these are mainly design related but I have so many ideas every time i receive a brief, my range of research to develop an idea can be so random but i think thats what gives my narrative strength...

heres the link to the Matt Pyke site.... www.universaleverything.com

my favourite piece of his is really old but it was something I was shown right toward the beginning of my design education and career... the kebab!

the image above is a variation on the original style of creating animation and images on a circle tube that enlarges and adapts to the image.... and the reason its called the kebab was because thats what he was influenced by to create it!

I wanted kick off this blog with the artist, designers and other influencing subjects....

So heres the first of many...

MATT PYKE!!!

I just love his work ethic, work that he does and how its all not intimidating...

the few pictures I have are to show just a mil of what influences about his work...
